Andrew Ng

Legacy & significance

Ng did more than any single figure to turn machine learning from a graduate-school subject into a skill anyone could learn online, while simultaneously building the industrial-scale infrastructure, Google Brain among it, that made deep learning practical at big-tech scale.

Major achievements & key works

• Co-founding Google Brain (2011). Built large-scale deep learning infrastructure at Google, including the 'cat-recognizing neural network' experiment that demonstrated unsupervised feature learning at scale.
• Stanford CS229 and the Coursera Machine Learning course (2011). One of the first and most-enrolled MOOCs in history, credited with introducing machine learning to a global mainstream audience.
• Chief Scientist, Baidu (2014-2017). Led Baidu's AI Group, expanding speech recognition and deep learning research at one of the world's largest tech companies.
• deeplearning.ai and the AI Fund. Built specialization courses that trained millions of practitioners and funded a portfolio of applied-AI startups.
